December glows with ruby, the stone of the holidays

Our stone for December is ruby. Why ruby? Let’s start at the beginning: what is its history, and why does it matter so much?

Ruby is one of the most admired and sought-after gemstones in the world, prized for its beauty and for the history and symbolism it carries. Its intense red ranges from cherry to the deep shade known as “pigeon’s blood,” and it is often called the “king” of gems, a symbol of ardor, strength and vitality.

Over the centuries, ruby has been linked to power and protection. Ancient civilizations believed it gave its wearer courage and strength and guarded against physical attack and negative energy. Medieval warriors wore rubies to feel invincible in battle, convinced the stone would fortify their spirit.

Goldsmiths have long loved ruby, too: many historic jewels, from royal crowns to the necklaces of the high aristocracy, are set with it.

Ruby is also the traditional stone for the 15th wedding anniversary, a wish that a relationship will stay strong and ardent over time. Throughout history, ruby has been a symbol of fiery love, tireless energy and lasting beauty, and it still is.

Why ruby for December?

In Western astrology, December’s traditional stone is turquoise. Yet ruby, with its deep, vivid red, is in tune with the mood of the season, especially at Christmas. For those born under Sagittarius (through December 21) and Capricorn (from December 22), ruby can hold real meaning: for Sagittarians it is said to stir ardor and courage, while for Capricorns it is seen as an amulet of protection and prosperity, believed to help them keep their energy and motivation through hard times.

Ruby is also linked to wishes and ambitions, which makes it a fitting choice for a December birthday: a wish for a year full of success and achievement.

Christmas gifts, and ruby as a good-luck stone for the new year

Ruby makes a fine Christmas gift. Rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings set with rubies are often given as symbolic gifts, an elegant and meaningful way to show love and affection.

Because ruby is considered a stone of protection and strength, giving it at Christmas wishes the recipient good health, prosperity and a life full of ardor and success. It is also tied to wishes and ambitions and said to spur motivation and determination, so it can carry a wish for fulfillment and happiness in the year ahead.
